The theme selected was related to the Greek crisis and the European Project (construction and reinforcement of the European Union)
The team composed by Didier Martín Díez and Miguel Merediz, from Fifth Year and Third Year, respectively, in the Dual Degree in Law and International Relations (E5), was victorious in the finals of the 15th Rector´s Debate Trophy, winning out over Carlota Delso (First Year of Engineering combined with Business Administration, from the ICAI School of Engineering) and Francisco Pérez-Crespo (Fourth Year of E5). Both teams reached the finals after winning six hotly contested debates over a span of six classifying rounds in which the subject of debate was whether the Greek crisis has done irreparable damage to the European Project.
The first team mentioned here rejected the idea that the situation in Greece affected Europe, since, according to their point of view, “we have come out strengthened politically, institutionally and economically”, and that the situation will make Europe stronger than what it was. The second team mentioned above defended the idea that, with the crisis, “the European Union Project has gone astray”, since “the mechanisms for solving conflicts in the European Union did not work”.
