The Spain Report, which turns 25 years old in its 2018 edition, is presented
The “Spain Report” has been an observer of Spanish social reality for 25 years, from different points of view, and has become a reference when analyzing how we have changed during this time. The 2018 edition focuses on four fundamental challenges for Spain: employment, demography, territorial challenges and the environment.
According to Agustín Blanco, Director of the José María Martín Patino Chair for the Culture of Encounter, "we have put together a story that can help us understand the present and face the future based on the dialogue and consensus necessary to reach shared diagnoses of the real problems that Spanish society is facing ".
These four challenges - all related to each other - have been appearing in the report, in one way or another for twenty-five years, and constitute the backbone of its structure. This is the case with the issue of demography. In the opinion of the authors of the chapter in which the birth rate situation in Spain is analyzed, the distance between desired fertility rates and actual fertility rates suggests the existence of important barriers that prevent people from carrying out their desire to have more children.
